The worst Secret Santa gifts, ranked by how fast the room goes quiet
Somewhere out there is a person about to unwrap your parcel in front of eleven other people. They will have roughly one second to arrange their face.
This article is a public service for that face. Everything below is a real thing that real people have really given, and every one of them is a mistake. Do not take notes.
Tier one: the classics of not caring
1. The mug with a joke on it. The joke was funny in 2011. The mug will outlive us all, because nobody can throw away a mug, and so it will sit at the back of a cupboard for thirty years as a small ceramic monument to the four minutes you spent choosing it.
2. The scented candle you were given last year. Re-gifting is a noble art. Re-gifting with the previous tag half-scraped off is a confession.
3. The bath set from the petrol station. It is shaped like a duck, it smells like a windscreen, and everybody in the room can price it to the cent because they drove past the same shop.
4. The gift card with €7.34 on it. Not a round number. A balance. You gave someone your leftovers and called it a present.
Tier two: the ones that are secretly a message
5. The gym membership. Nothing says “I thought about you” quite like “I thought about your body.”
6. The book about becoming a better person. Received as a diagnosis, every time, no matter how gently the cover is designed.
7. The label maker, the drawer organiser, the “declutter your life” kit. You have not given a gift. You have filed a complaint about their desk.
Tier three: the ones that are secretly homework
8. The plant that needs watering twice a day. You have handed someone a dependent. It will die in February and they will feel bad about it, which was not, one hopes, the plan.
9. The experience voucher. Valid Tuesdays only, ninety minutes away, expires in six weeks, requires a companion who also has a voucher. It is not a gift, it is a logistics problem in a card.
10. The thing that needs batteries you did not include. Now a parent is going out on the 26th of December. Well done.
11. The animal adopted in their name. They receive a certificate, a photograph of a snow leopard they will never meet, and the knowledge that you gave money to somebody else.
The final boss
12. The framed photograph of yourself. Unbeatable. There is no recovery, no polite response, and no shelf in their home where it can go. It is technically thoughtful, which is what makes it devastating.
Fine, the useful thirty seconds
If you actually want to do this properly: the reason all twelve fail is that they are about the giver. The mug was about your afternoon, the gym membership was about your opinion, the voucher was about your budget.
A gift that lands is about the person opening it, and you only manage that if you know who you drew early enough to notice something about them. That means drawing names two weeks out rather than the night before.
And if you genuinely want to give something terrible, do it in the format built for it: a worst-gift contest, where the whole room is trying to lose, and everybody knows it. That is a completely different evening — and a much better one than watching somebody hold a photograph of you.
